Chapter 17

Isolde

Traversing the now familiar paths leading to the nursery. The tall grass tickled my claves as I made quiet steps through the well-worn paths to the central market. It still surprised me how much this place was starting to feel like home. The smells became familiar, as familiar as the faces I passed.

My heat had been indescribable, and it wasn’t just the sex. It was the closeness between me and my unit, the way they came together, gave me all of themselves, and expected nothing from me in return.

For the first time, my wolf felt whole, full, calm.

Reaching the center of the market a tinge of uncertainty snaked up my spine. How would today go? Especially after last time. The whole pack must be aware I came into heat by now. I fight a warm flush rising to my cheeks. Engulfed in the intensity of my heat, nothing mattered, but now with my body and mind in its normal state, all the worries and fears rushed back.

I was an omega, no matter how much I lucked out with my unit. No matter how much I felt like they wanted me, craved the intimacy I did. This was still about the pack, about producing pups. My hand covers my abdomen, wondering if a pup is already growing inside me. I worried that it was.

I shut down that thought. There would be time for worrying later. For now, all I wanted and needed was a sense of normalcy. I entered the market, and two enforcers ahead of me promptly averted their eyes.

“Good morning,” I tried while passing them.

“Good morning,” the first replied, his eyes still downcast.

The second simply nodded before both hurried away.

Okay, that was…odd.

As I was walking through the busy path, more and more males turned their faces with brief almost fearful smiles. A few even changed directions when they saw me walking down the path. Dread settled in the pit of my stomach. Did I do something wrong?

I approached the nursery, mind still on the increasingly odd behavior of those around me. The males, who once exchanged friendly nods and amiable greetings, now averted their gaze, practically treating me like she bore an infectious disease. Their avoidance was blatant, leaving me bewildered and, in a way, disheartened. Did I think I belonged too soon?

Was this strange behavior a result of my heat?

My wolf growled her rejection of the idea. Huffing at my insecurity, but for once I couldn’t take comfort in it.

Burying my confusion beneath a mask of indifference, I forged ahead, determined to fulfill my obligations at the nursery. When the sight of the simple tan building came into view, I released a breath I didn’t know I was holding. Maybe here I could find some respite from the questions littering my brain.

The doors opened with a soft chime from the bells overhead. The soft smell of paint and thinner permeated the air as women moved back and forth all busy with respective tasks. Some of the women offered restrained smiles and I tried not to linger on the churn in my gut each time it happened.
